Activities

Conceived in disease prevention and health promotion, the Department of Hygiene, a discipline of social medicine, is interested in a variety of research areas including environmental health, occupational health, mental health, school health, community health and care welfare, mainly via field works. Especially, the Department has been participating in special health examinations for hand-arm vibration syndrome among vibrating tool operators in forestry for more than 30 years. Based on these activities, the Department has been continuously engaged in the research of hand-arm vibration syndrome.

Research interests

  1. Elucidation of pathology in hand-arm vibration syndrome and establishment of its novel diagnostic system
  2. A comparison of hand-arm vibration syndrome between tropical and colder climates
  3. Fundamental studies to assess the usefulness of novel vibration perception meters developed on the ISO standard
  4. Epidemiological studies for risk factors and comorbidities of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children
  5. An interventional approach for relieving mental strain among teachers and parents having children with developmental disorders
  6. An interventional approach for coping stress among police officers
  7. Improvement of pain in lower extremities by the blood circulation promotion induced by the high concentration artificial CO2 warm water bathing effects
  8. Usefulness of pulse wave velocity for the assessment of cardiovascular risk among adolescents
  9. Longitudinal changes of body mass index (BMI) among schoolchildren
  10. Fundamental studies to evaluate health effects of Umeshu and other fruit liqueurs
