Rehabilitation medicine consists of two specialized fields. The first one is a field whose diagnosis and treatment are based on physical medicine, using long-established kinesitherapy, electric stimulation, thermotherapy, equipment therapy, occupational therapy (activities of daily living training), mainly treating patients who have a disorder in motor function, searching for the pathophysiology of the disease and performing a diagnosis using an electrophysiologic test, and others. The second one is to let a patient reach their maximal level in physical, mental, social, and vocational aspects and to enhance a patient’s quality of life (QOL).
Our department mainly performs rehabilitation treatment (physiotherapy which includes kinesitherapy, occupational therapy which includes activities of daily living training, and speech therapy which includes language and swallowing training) for patients who have a wide variety of disorders such as brain disease including apoplexy and traumatic brain contusion (cognitive deficit), spinal cord disease, peripheral nerve and muscle disease, rheumatoid arthritis, collagen disease, bone and joint disease, ablation, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, a disease of young children, eating and swallowing difficulty etc. We treat about 140 patients everyday.
